How to Plan a 4-5 Day Trip to Thiruvananthapuram

It will be great to spend four to five days in the State capital of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, with its nice combination of natural, historical, and cultural attractions. Be it the ancient temples and castles, quiet beaches, or wildlife refuges, this program will take you to see the best in this city and environs. Given below is your schedule for day-to-day travel.

Day 1: Exploring the Culture at City Centre

Your day starts from the heart of the religion and culture of Thiruvananthapuram.

Morning: The Padmanabhaswamy Temple is the most famous place to be visited.

The temple is one of the most beautiful and better-known ones in India, the presiding deity being Lord Vishnu. As this temple represents highly sketched Dravidian architecture, it surely forms one of the places to be covered, and the spiritual atmosphere prevailing here is definitely not to be overlooked. Remember, the dress code for this temple is strictly followed.

Afternoon: Napier Museum and Zoo
From here, proceed to Napier Museum, that houses a treasure of history, art, and culture about Kerala. Adjacent to it is the Thiruvananthapuram zoo, one of India’s oldest zoos. Lush surroundings and the species of tigers, leopards, and exotic birds make for a pleasurable afternoon.

Evening: Have an evening walk in the Kanakakunnu Palace premises and watch the cultural performances arranged within the palace premises.
Later in the evening, go for a silent night time walk around the Kanakakunnu Palace-a fabulous architectural wonder. If luck serves you, the grounds of the palace itself will be abuzz with a traditional Kerala show, such as Mohiniyattam or Kathakali.

Day 2: Historical Sites and Energetic Towns

Get soaked in royalty and rich heritage along with the vibrant local life of Thiruvananthapuram.

Morning: Kuthira Malika or Puthen Malika Palace
Begin your day with this palace, which is more famous as the Palace of Horses, because of its unique horse-shaped wooden carvings. The palace museum has royalty relics, traditional Kerala architecture, and intricate woodwork.

Afternoon: Shopping at Chalai Bazaar.
To get a glimpse of the local life, one should visit the most ancient and busiest market, city- Chalai Bazaar. Starting from fresh vegetables and fruits to spices, textiles, and handicrafts, each and everything is sold in this market. Be ready to bargain for the best deals!

Afternoon: Quiet time at Shanghumugham Beach and enjoy the sunset.
Relax at the soothing sound of waves at the famous Shanghumugham Beach for its brilliant sunsets. The more photographic views at the beach are with the giant mermaid sculpture known as “Sagarakanyaka.”

Day 3: Leisure Day at Kovalam Beach

Full-Day: Spend a day at Kovalam Beach.
It ranges from Kovalam Beach, which is close to Thiruvananthapuram, with neat and clean sands, tranquil waters, and a very vibrant atmosphere. One can go for sunbathing, swimming in the Arabian Sea, or other water sports such as surfing and paragliding. Very nearby stands the Kovalam Lighthouse, which one easily can climb up for unparalleled views of the coastline.

Food Tip: Have fresh catches of the day from one of the many shacks and restaurants at the beach. Do try Kerala-style prawns and grilled fish.

Day 4: Nature and Wildlife

Thiruvananthapuram offers a rare combination of natural landscapes and wildlife-all within a very short drive from the city.

Morning: Neyyar Dam and Wildlife Sanctuary.
Start your day with a visit to Neyyar Dam, which lies 30 km away from the city. The wildlife sanctuary here is a home for animals such as elephants, tigers, and wild boars. Further, one can have boating in the reservoir followed by a visit to the crocodile rehabilitation center and deer rehabilitation center.

Noon: Pay a visit to Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary.
Continue the nature exploration to Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, replete with rolling hills, evergreen forests, and rich biodiversity. The trek in the sanctuary will help you spot such animals as elephants, leopards, and several avian species.

Evening: Drive back to the city and enjoy a traditional Kerala Sadhya dinner: a vegetarian meal course served on a banana leaf, comprising rice, avial, sambar, and payasam.
